Meda is located in a beautiful part of the Kimberly region – in northern West Australia – and is 700km north of the Tropic of Capricorn.
The Kimberly has a rich Aboriginal history, was one of the earliest settled parts of Australia and is one of the world’s largest wilderness frontiers. It’s an ancient landscape, with steep-sided mountain ranges, and cut-through limestone and sandstone gorges. The tropical monsoon climate is challenging, with around 90% of rainfall during the wet season – November to April.
The stock camp convenes in early April and staff on Meda work incredibly hard until the end of November. During the offseason and while the seasonal workers are away, the focus of work shifts primarily to maintenance and getting ready for the next season. The mustering is done by helicopter, with assistance from stockmen and women on horseback.
Along with nearby Blina Station, Meda is heavily involved in local Campdraft and Rodeo events. Key events include:
- The Fitzroy Crossing Rodeo and Campdraft
- Halls Creek Rodeo and Races
- Kununnurra Rodeo
- Derby Rodeo
- Broome Rodeos
Fishing is excellent on weekends off – when the Barramundi are biting, there’s nothing more exciting! Fall in love with the land and the wilderness, and push yourself in one of world’s most remote and beautiful areas.
